The ANBA Open is the flagship event in
the ANBA calendar; as it's name suggests, the event is "open" to allcomers,
and it attracts not only the cream of 9-ball talent from the north east of
Scotland, but also from all over the UK.
In the inaugural 2001 event, a
£1000 prize fund was up for grabs, and the tournament at Rileys (Chapel
Street, Aberdeen) attracted a clutch of English professionals, as well as
half of the top ten in Scotland. Michael Valentine scooped the £500
first prize in a nail-biting final.
In 2002, a Budweiser sponsored
£1700 purse attracted a similar line up to new venue Miami Beach in
Aberdeen; regular world championship contender Anthony Ginn hit
peak form at the business end of the tournament to collect the £800 prize
and trophy.
In 2003, Scotland international
Sean Boxall went through the day unbeaten against the likes of fellow
SAPPA top 16 man Darren Raine, and ANBA's John McCann (twice) and Derek
Hearns to record a convincing triumph. |
